A shocking recent event brought many people together in an urgent rescue mission. It all started when someone accidentally spotted a cat stranded on a busy highway, desperately needing help.
The witness instantly contacted Greenpoint Cats, a New York-based cat rescue, which wasted no time in responding to a feline that was just minutes away from disaster.
Volunteers from Greenpoint Cats and Puppy Kitty NY City quickly arrived at the scene and began devising a plan to rescue the frightened cat.
No one knew for sure how she ended up in such a dangerous place, but the volunteers shared in an interview:
“Most likely, the kitten had been hunkered down in the engine or wheel hub of a car and then jumped out at the worst possible spot.”
The frightened cat had a hard time avoiding the busy traffic. With no safe escape route, she ended up clinging to the side of the highway.
Thankfully, the kitty was spotted just in time, and soon, many rescuers arrived to lend a helping hand. Alyssa, a foster volunteer with Puppy Kitty NY City, shared:
“Volunteers along with NYPDS showed up to rescue her from the highway and catch her if she fell.”
However, the poor feline was too frightened to move, unaware that these kind people were there to save her.
The volunteers from Greenpoint Cats described the tense situation:
“The kitten had been perched there for hours with traffic whizzing by on one side and a 50+ foot drop on the other. It was terrifying to witness and obviously even more terrifying for the kitten.”
Eventually, the volunteers agreed to have one person coax the cat from the highway while the others held a large sheet below, ready to catch her if necessary.
It was a heart-stopping moment, but fortunately, luck was on the cat’s side. Alyssa shared:
“With volunteers stopping traffic to form a safety net below, Officer Hernandez, a cat parent himself, was able to get the kitten into a carrier.”
The rescue mission turned out to be better than expected, and the cat, later named Perry, was successfully rescued from the dangerous situation she had been in. Alyssa added:
“She sure was lucky to be spotted in such a scary place and to have everyone come out to save her.”
Following the rescue mission, Perry was taken to Puppy Kitty NY City rescue, where she received all the care she needed.
However, even though she wasn’t physically injured, Perry was still fearful, recovering from the shock she experienced.
That was when Alyssa decided to step in and turn things around. She welcomed Perry into her foster home, providing her with a comfortable and safe space where she could fully recover.
And it didn’t take long for her to relax. After just one night, Perry became less hissy and defensive.
Slowly but surely, she began warming up, not just to treats, but also to Alyssa who was incredibly patient with her. She said:
“I keep doing this a few times a day for short periods. She’s out of her cubby and feeling a little more comfortable. She’s coming along and adjusting slowly – many thanks to treats.”
Perry was determined to overcome her fears, trying her best to open up. She began enjoying pets and chin scratches and even curiously watched Alyssa playing with other foster kitties.
With an experienced foster parent like Alyssa by her side, there’s no doubt that Perry will continue to grow in confidence.
She is learning how to thrive, and we can only hope that her future is filled with love, security, and the happiness she truly deserves.
