Crusty Gremlin Kitten Steals Hearts At Indiana Rescue, All He Wants Is Someone To Love Him

At the Dekalb Humane Society in Auburn, Indiana, the staff has seen all kinds of animal stories: some heartwarming, some heartbreaking, and a few that are just plain weird.

But nothing could have prepared them for the scruffy little creature who recently landed in their arms.

He wasn’t graceful. He wasn’t fluffy. And honestly, he looked like something out of a cartoon. But somehow… he was kind of perfect.

This is the story of Sewer Rat, a tiny, wild-haired kitten found all alone in a trailer park, who somehow managed to steal everyone’s heart.

There was no mom or siblings in sight and no clue what was going on. The team at DHS took him up right away.

He looked like he’d just wrestled and lost. He was filthy, patchy, and clearly not feeling great, as the shelter shared in a Facebook post:

“This is Sewer Rat. He’s a kitten. Allegedly. He currently looks like he crawled out of a haunted crawlspace.”

But even then, there was something oddly adorable about him. Once they got him inside and gave him a proper checkup, the mystery started to make sense…

Poor Sewer Rat was fighting off a major skin infection – ringworm, and not the mild kind either.

His fur was growing in strange places and his skin was so irritated, as the shelter shared in an interview:

“He came in with one of the worst cases of ringworm we’ve seen in a long time: a severe, contagious fungal infection that affects the skin and fur.”

But through all of it? He never hissed. Never swatted. He just kept purring. It turns out, this little dude was as sweet as a cinnamon roll.

At just around 7 weeks old, you’d expect a kitten like him to be fussy or scared. Instead, he’s the opposite.

Everyone who meets him gets the same feeling: this kid’s different. A little scrappy, a little crusty, but full of love.

And yes, he looks more like a gremlin than a kitten right now. His fur’s all patchy, and he has that “just rolled out of a sewer pipe” kind of vibe.

But it’s working for him. He’s got personality, charm, and a weird little spark that makes people smile. No wonder the whole staff fell for him fast.

Now, Sewer Rat is staying with a foster family, getting cozy and healing up while he continues his treatment.

He still needs a bit of time as ringworm takes patience, and he’ll need a safe space to hang out where he won’t accidentally share his fungal flair. But his spirit? It’s already glowing.

Sewer Rat might not be a typical picture-perfect kitten, but that’s what makes him so special. He’s got grit, heart, and the sweetness that sticks with you. The DHS shared:

“We know Sewer Rat isn’t everyone’s type. He’s patchy. He’s fungal… But he’s also healing, sweet, playful, and so much closer to being okay.”

DHS believes his forever home is out there, someone with a kind heart, a spare room, and maybe a soft spot for underdogs… or undercats.

In the meantime, his story is reaching people far and wide, shining a light on just how lovable medically complicated pets can be.

Because every animal deserves a shot at happiness, even the ones with crusty ears and wild fur.

Sewer Rat may look like a mess, but he’s healing fast. And underneath all that patchiness? He’s just a baby who wants to be loved.
