Sometimes, the most extraordinary rescues begin with an ordinary walk. That’s exactly how Veronica Shea’s journey with three lost dogs in the Angeles National Forest began.

One day, Veronica set out on her usual hiking trail with her dog. The air was crisp, the trail quiet, when she suddenly noticed movement on the cliffside.

At first, she thought it might be wildlife. But as she rounded a bend, the huge dark shape became clear—it was a dog, scrambling up the rocks.

Her curiosity piqued, Veronica decided to follow. That’s when she found not just one, but two more dogs.

Thin, hungry, and frightened, the trio looked completely out of place in the wilderness. Most people would have kept walking, but Veronica couldn’t. Something inside her told her she had to help.

The problem? The dogs didn’t trust people. In a YouTube video recounting the moment, she explained:

“We tried to get them in the car and they were not having it because they didn’t like people to be around them… They were super scared if you would get too close they would just run away.”

Their condition broke her heart. Their ribs showed, their spines jutted out under their fur—they were starving, barely hanging on. Veronica made a promise then and there. She couldn’t save them all at once, but she wouldn’t give up.

Day after day, she hiked back up the mountain. She brought food, patiently waiting nearby as the dogs slowly began to accept her presence.

It was a slow process, but eventually, they ate from her hand. It was a small step, but one filled with hope. Along the way, she gave them names: Princess George, Grace, and Steve.

Still, Veronica knew food alone wasn’t enough. The dogs needed real safety. Trapping them individually was too risky—it might scatter the others and ruin their trust. So, she reached out for help.

Soon, a team of dedicated rescuers joined her, and together they came up with a plan. Using creativity and determination, they built a makeshift cage to safely transport the dogs. It wasn’t quick or easy, but the plan worked.

When all three were finally secured, Veronica couldn’t hold back her emotions. She admitted tearfully:

“Once we got them I basically just kind of cried all the way down the mountain.”

Their journey, however, didn’t end at the bottom of the hill. The dogs were terrified of human touch, unable to be leashed or even approached without panic.

They needed someone with deep patience and understanding. That’s when fate brought them to Cheri Wulff Lucas, a renowned dog behaviorist in California.

Cheri hadn’t planned on adopting them, but as the weeks turned into months, she realized she couldn’t let them go. Her quiet property offered the perfect environment for healing. Slowly, George, Grace, and Steve adjusted to life among other dogs.

Something remarkable happened too—the trio even began helping Cheri in her training work. They proved especially impactful for another rescue named Andi, a dog who had lived in isolation for seven years.

The three comforted her, showing her that life with humans could be safe. Watching their bond, Cheri knew Andi belonged with them, and she adopted her too.

Now, years later, the transformation is breathtaking. Princess George and Steve romp around happily, full of energy and joy. Grace remains a little shy, but within her pack, she has blossomed.

All three are healthy, confident, and loved—worlds away from the frightened figures hiding in the mountains.

Their past was filled with hardship, but their future is nothing but bright. Thanks to Veronica’s compassion and Cheri’s devotion, Princess George, Grace, and Steve will never be abandoned again.

They are living proof that patience, kindness, and teamwork can turn despair into the happiest of endings.
