NY Family Shocked To Wake Up To A Flooded Home And Falling Ceiling, All Caused By Their Cat
Alanna Matson, who shares her life on TikTok as @ajmagnifica18, thought the hardest part of her summer would be getting through the final weeks of pregnancy with twins during a brutal heat wave.
She never imagined her cat, Sam, would be the one to turn her life upside down in a way she’d never forget.
Sam has never been a troublemaker. He’s the type of cat who prefers curling under blankets or lounging in the background, as his mom described him in an interview:
“Sam is normally a really low-key cat. He is an indoor cat, so typically, he’s just lounging or tucked under a blanket somewhere. He generally only makes his presence known when the terror of his food bowl being empty sets in, or he is looking for a pet.”
But Sam had recently developed a strange fascination with the bathroom sink. And that harmless curiosity quickly spiraled into a disaster no one could have predicted.
At first, Alanna and her husband noticed the faucet mysteriously running at odd hours of the night. They assumed their kids had been sneaking out to play with the water.
But when confronted, the kids denied it completely. Weeks went by with the mystery unsolved, until one night, Alanna caught the culprit red-handed.
There was Sam, confidently perched on the sink, pawing at the handle like he’d been doing it his whole life. She recalled:
“We thought someone was getting up during the night and leaving the sink on. They denied it completely. It wasn’t until the video I included, where Sam demonstrated his sink turning-on skill, that we realized it had been him all along.”
From then on, it was a battle. The couple tried everything to stop Sam’s sink obsession.
They wrapped a rubber band around the handle, and they blocked access to the bathroom, but Sam always found a way around their efforts.
Then came the night when Sam’s curiosity turned into chaos. He managed to turn on the faucet again, only this time he sat right on top of the drain, blocking it completely.
The water had nowhere to go. Slowly, the sink filled, then overflowed, spilling into the bathroom and streaming down into the kitchen below.
The next morning, Alanna’s husband discovered the mess. At first, he thought maybe it was just a small leak, something he could fix with a towel and some paint.
But when he stepped downstairs, the reality hit: the kitchen ceiling had started to buckle from the weight of all that water. Within minutes, it collapsed.
Alanna remembers that moment vividly, sharing:
“He told me it had leaked and he could fix it with some paint and towels. I went downstairs, and that’s when the ceiling started to buckle, and we knew there was no saving it.”
With Alanna’s due date right around the corner, the timing couldn’t have been worse.
They called their insurance company immediately, and before long, a restoration crew filled the house with dryers and dehumidifiers to combat the damage.
Meanwhile, Alanna went into labor. When she returned from the hospital just 36 hours later with her two newborn daughters, the house was still gutted and noisy, with giant machines running nonstop. She shared:
“When I left, the kitchen floor and ceiling and the bathroom floor had been torn out, and three massive dryers were running nonstop… I was only in the hospital for 36 hours, so the house was in the same state when we arrived home.”
Through it all, Sam acted like nothing was wrong. He lounged around as if the construction crew were just an annoyance interrupting his nap schedule.
Eventually, the family decided the only way to avoid another disaster was to swap the sink altogether. They replaced it with a traditional model that had an overflow valve, something Sam’s clever paws couldn’t outsmart.
The story of Sam’s watery mischief quickly went viral, with viewers both horrified and amused by the chaos one cat could create.
