Kind Seattle Woman Gives A Forgotten Senior Cat The Loving Home She Truly Deserves

woman and a senior cat

Beanie, the sweet tabby cat of today’s heartwarming story, lived a full and cherished 14 years with her loving owner.

She enjoyed a comfortable home and a bond with her human that most pets can only dream of. But everything changed when tragedy struck.

Sadly, Beanie’s owner passed away, leaving her alone and unsure of her future. The family members who took over weren’t able to care for Beanie, so she was brought to the Seattle Humane Society, where her hopes for a new home began to fade.

At the shelter, Beanie spent days watching potential adopters come and go, her hopes rising every time someone walked in, only to be crushed when they passed her by.

Most visitors were looking for playful kittens, not a senior cat, and Beanie’s sadness deepened. She had already lost her beloved owner and now faced the pain of being overlooked by people who might have given her a chance.

Resigning herself to her loneliness, Beanie withdrew, curling up in the corner of her cage with her head down. She waited in silence for the loneliness to end, unaware that a change was about to come.

Then, one day, a kind-hearted woman named Nozomi Momo walked into the shelter.

Nozomi, a former volunteer at the Seattle Humane Society, had a soft spot for senior cats.

She knew the challenges older cats faced in finding homes and was determined to give them a chance. When she learned about Beanie, she was immediately drawn to her.

The first time Nozomi saw Beanie, she was curled up in the corner, visibly stressed and thin from lack of food. Nozomi recounted their first meeting in an interview:

“She was definitely very stressed. She wasn’t eating, unfortunately, so she lost a lot of weight. But she was just so sweet. She was kinda meowing a little bit, and we started petting her, and then she showed us her belly.”

As any cat lover knows, when a cat shows you their belly, they’re offering their trust. At that moment, Nozomi knew that Beanie had finally found someone who would love her.

Nozomi brought Beanie home, determined to give her the space and time she needed to adjust. Initially, Beanie was shy and skittish, retreating to Nozomi’s closet and curling up in the sock drawer for comfort.

But over the weeks, Beanie’s transformation began. She started to trust Nozomi, and before long, their bond grew strong.

Beanie became her playful, affectionate self again. She began following Nozomi around the house, cuddling, and even chattering away as they spent time together.

From a withdrawn and depressed cat, Beanie blossomed into the sweet, lively kitty she had always been.

Nozomi admired Beanie’s maturity, because despite her age, Beanie has strong boundaries yet communicates them gently.

She’s kind and friendly, tolerates being picked up and held, and cooperates during grooming sessions. But Beanie wasn’t just about calm, gentle cuddles. She still had a mischievous streak. Nozomi laughed, adding:

“She’ll struggle to even get up on the couch sometimes, but she’ll magically get up on the kitchen counter. She’s the oldest baby!”

The bond between Nozomi and Beanie wasn’t just about companionship – it became a source of emotional support. Nozomi shared that Beanie had been a comfort during some of her most challenging moments.

“One session was particularly hard, and she like stayed in my lap for like half hour, which with her joints… I don’t think it feels good to stay in one position for that long (…). But she just stayed in my lap for a whole half hour, while I was having some of the hardest work I had to do. And yeah, my therapist was like, ‘Wow, that was some of the best work you’ve done.’ And she was like, ‘It’s definitely your cat!’”

Beanie’s journey, from the sadness of losing her owner to finding a loving and supportive forever home, is one of healing and hope. Her story reminds us of the power of love and patience, especially when adopting senior pets.

Today, Beanie is not only cherished in her forever home but also loved by an online community.
