South Carolina Firefighter Finds Shocking Surprise Inside The Fire Hose

firefighter discovers kittens in fire hose

You’ve probably heard stories of firefighters heroically rescuing kittens from trees. But this one is a little different. These tiny furballs didn’t end up in a tree, they were discovered in the most unexpected spot instead.

While on duty at the Myrtle Beach Fire Department in South Carolina, young firefighter Chris Osterhaus heard an unusual noise coming from one of their fire trucks.

Curious, he investigated and couldn’t believe what he found: four newborn kittens curled up on a coiled fire hose. How they ended up there remains a mystery.

What started as a normal day at Station 3 quickly turned into a heartwarming rescue mission. Dana O’Brien, the department’s emergency management specialist and public information officer, said in an interview

“This was a surprise. Nothing quite like this has ever happened in our department before!”

The tiny kittens still had their eyes closed, clearly left all alone, crying in distress. Their mother was nowhere in sight.

Thankfully, the compassionate crew quickly sprang into action.

Chris, who has a soft spot for animals, made a cozy shelter for the kittens inside a box lined with soft linens to keep them warm and safe.

The team checked each kitten carefully to ensure none were left behind, while a firefighter contacted a local animal shelter to provide ongoing care.

The kittens, estimated to be about ten days old, were transported to the shelter where they received the attention and nourishment they needed. A few days later, the city shared a heartwarming update on Facebook:

“We are happy to share that each of the four kittens found cuddled up in the hose bed of a fire engine are purrrfectly thriving!”

As for their mother, the city explained that she was likely somewhere in Conway:

“The fire engine was in Conway for maintenance and transported back to the Myrtle Beach station the night before the kittens were found… We believe the mama cat had the kittens in the hose bed while the engine was parked at the mechanic shop…”

It’s still unknown whether the mother abandoned her litter or was searching for them after they were transported to Myrtle Beach. Many hope she will be rescued soon as well.

The kittens, now named Chief, Quint, Smokey, and Halligan, are safe in a foster home, enjoying hearty meals and plenty of cuddles.

Their foster dad happens to be a retired firefighter, whose wife offered to help once she heard about the rescue, how perfect is that?

Stories like these highlight the dedication and kindness of firefighters, showing that their work goes beyond battling flames, they also step in to save our furry friends.
