A hiker in South Carolina went out for a peaceful hike… and ended up part of an unforgettable rescue mission that still gives her chills every time she thinks about it.

Let me tell you all about it.

Sandy Harris had planned a routine hike at Jones Gap State Park. But halfway through it, the sun started blazing down, and she almost turned back.

Yet, something told her to keep going.

And then she saw her. Hidden in the thick brush was a German shepherd, lying so still that Sandy’s heart nearly stopped.

At first, she thought the poor dog might already be gone. But when she crouched closer, she saw a flicker of life in those tired eyes.

The dog tried to move but couldn’t. Her leg was badly injured, and every tiny shift sent waves of pain through her body. Alone in the woods, she looked completely defeated.

Sandy’s phone had no signal, and they were two long, rocky miles from the trailhead. Carrying a seventy-five-pound dog out of that terrain? It was impossible.

So, she gave the shepherd some food and water and promised her to come back. That night, she went online and posted for help, not really knowing if anyone would respond.

By morning, three amazing women had joined the mission: Marcy Dimmick and Holly Jones from Labor of Love Transport Rescue, and volunteer tracker Luci Daley.

Armed with food, pain meds, and a stretcher, they set out early the next day to find the injured shepherd. The climb was tough, but what they found halfway up gave them hope.

Two hikers, Kyle Morgan and Dillon Tatum, had already discovered the dog and refused to leave her side. They’d been taking turns carrying her and trying their best to comfort her.

That’s when they finally learned her name from the collar around her neck: Koco.

Koco’s rescuers splinted her leg and gave her medication to ease the pain. Through it all, she stayed calm and trusting, as if she knew these humans were her miracle. Jones shared in an interview:

“I don’t know how much longer she would have even lasted. I mean, she was spent.”

Once Koco was secured on the stretcher, she lifted her head, keeping her eyes fixed on the trail ahead, like she somehow knew she was finally heading home.

The journey down was brutal. Two miles of rough ground, heat, and exhaustion. But no one complained. Every single person was focused on getting Koco to safety. Jonas shared:

“It was such an adrenaline rush. The whole time, it’s like, you don’t have any idea how much time has passed. You’ve just got one objective, and that is we got to get this dog to safety.”

After nearly three hours of nonstop effort, they made it back to the car. They were sweaty, muddy, and completely drained, but overwhelmed with relief.

At the vet, X-rays showed Koco’s leg bones were shattered. She needed surgery, and soon.

Thankfully, the operation went perfectly, and her doctors were confident she’d make a full recovery.

No one ever came forward to claim her. There was no microchip, no clue about her past. Still, maybe that’s okay, because her story isn’t about where she came from anymore. It’s about where she’s going.

Today, Koco is resting in a loving foster home, surrounded by warmth, care, and belly rubs. Her foster mom says she’s one of the sweetest souls she’s ever met.Koco may have been lost in the woods once, but now, she’s finally found her way home. Watch her amazing rescue in this video.
