When Catskill Animal Sanctuary in New York’s Hudson Valley received a call about a blind horse in urgent need, the timing couldn’t have been trickier. The team was already juggling a full plate of rescues, yet they knew they couldn’t turn away from this life-changing opportunity for one more animal.

Resources were already stretched thin, space was at a premium, and the team was working hard just to meet the needs of the animals already in their care.

The thought of welcoming another rescue—especially one facing the unique challenges of blindness—felt almost impossible.

Then, an unexpected twist changed everything.

Half in jest, one rescuer remarked, “If his name was Buddy…” as if that might somehow tip the scales. It was a casual comment, tossed into the air without any real expectation. But when they called out “Buddy,” the horse perked up. That was it—decision made. Buddy had found his way home.
