You know how sometimes your eyes play tricks on you? That’s exactly what happens to anyone passing by Ale’s house in Alexandria, Virginia.

Almost every day, someone slows down, does a double-take, or even slams on the brakes.

They’re convinced they’ve just spotted a bear chilling in her yard. Some even shout warnings out their car windows as Ale shared in an interview:

“People yell out of their car, ‘Ma’am, you have a bear in your backyard!’”

But the truth? It’s not a bear at all.

It’s Napoleon, her giant, fluffy Newfoundland dog. Big enough to look like a bear at first glance, but with the heart of a giant teddy bear.

Napoleon joined Ale’s life as a tiny puppy, and the two of them clicked instantly.

Wherever Ale went, he went too. Whatever she felt, he seemed to feel it right alongside her. He became more than just her dog; he was her safe place.

Things got even more real when Ale found out she was pregnant. While everyone else seemed over the moon, she felt heavy, both physically and emotionally.

She struggled under a cloud she couldn’t shake, feeling completely alone and helpless.

Through it all, Napoleon never left her side. They’d go on long walks along the cliffs near their home, just the two of them, and he was always there, silently offering comfort.

One day, things got too overwhelming for Ale. She drifted too close to the edge, both in emotion and physically.

Napoleon knew something was wrong. With gentle but firm nudges, he guided her back to a familiar bench.

There, he lay his head on her lap like he was saying, “I’ve got you. You’re not alone.”

In that moment, Ale realized just how much her best friend had saved her. She sat there with Napoleon right beside her, and finally let all her emotions spill out, sharing:

“He pulled my arm backwards to a bench where we always rested and laid his head on my lap, and I just sat there petting him, and I cried.”

It didn’t fix everything overnight, but it gave her the strength to carry on.

A few years later, things began to brighten. Every time her baby cried, Napoleon was instantly there, ready to check on the newest member of the family.

Ale’s little boy is now three, and Napoleon has taken on the role of full-time big brother and protector.

He still shadows Ale everywhere, just like he always has, but now he’s equally devoted to the tiny human he watches over.

Ale summed it up perfectly:

“He really is an angel. In the shape of a Newfoundland, but that’s the best kind.”

So yes, people might think they’re spotting a bear. But in reality, they’re seeing a gentle giant, a loyal companion, and a true hero in the life of the family he loves.
