Georgia Coyote Kept Trying To Play With Dogs, Then Rescuers Stepped In To Change His Life
When a coyote started slipping through doggy doors and bouncing on pool covers, rescuers knew they had to act fast to save his life.
An Unusual Neighborhood Visitor
Residents started noticing something very unusual. A coyote was wandering into backyards, but he wasn’t acting like a typical wild predator.
Instead of keeping his distance, he was actively trying to play with the local dogs. He was spotted slipping through doggy doors, hanging out on back porches, and even bouncing playfully on pool covers.
He seemed to be going from house to house, just looking for a friend to chase around.
His friendly antics immediately made people wonder if he had been hand-raised with domestic dogs, or if he might even be a coyote-dog mix.
A Divided Community
The coyote, who became known as Carmine, quickly gained a local fan base. Many people loved seeing his playful behavior and felt affection for the unusual animal.
However, not everyone was thrilled. A large number of residents were understandably frightened by having a wild animal so close to their homes and pets.
Fearful that their dogs might get bitten, some neighbors wanted Carmine gone, and they didn’t care if he survived the process.
Normally, coyotes are wild animals that should be left in nature. But because Carmine was so habituated to humans and dogs, his situation was incredibly dangerous.
A Race Against Time
Rescuers knew that if they didn’t step in, Carmine’s life would be cut short. His friendly antics were putting him directly in harm’s way.
The situation became urgent when fearful homeowners hired a wildlife trapper to set traps for him.
If Carmine was caught in those traps, the trapper was legally allowed to euthanize him.
The rescue team began experiencing sleepless nights, knowing they were racing against the clock to save his life.
A Difficult Target
Trying to capture Carmine proved to be incredibly difficult. He was constantly on the move, never staying in one place for long.
He could be spotted in one city in the morning, and by that evening, he would have traveled five to ten miles away to a completely different town.
The rescue effort dragged on, taking about two agonizing months altogether.
Every day that passed was another day Carmine was at risk of wandering into the wrong trap.
The Midnight Alert
Finally, the breakthrough came. In the middle of the night, a rescuer received an alert that Carmine had been safely secured in their trap.
They rushed over immediately to find the beautiful coyote waiting for them.
Surprisingly, Carmine wasn’t frantically stressed out like a typical wild animal would be in a trap. He was actually fairly calm.
They gently loaded him onto the back of their truck, ready to take him to his new life.
A Sanctuary Waiting
The rescuers already had a destination in mind for Carmine: the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary in Lilburn, Georgia.
There was a female coyote named Wilee already living there. Wilee was a confiscated coyote who had been illegally hand-raised.
She was living by herself and didn’t have any friends or other coyotes to keep her company.
Since coyotes are naturally monogamous and mate for life, the team hoped that Carmine and Wilee could find companionship in each other.
A Careful Introduction
Despite their hopes, the team had major concerns. Not all animals do well meeting each other in captivity, and there was a real risk that they might fight.
To ensure safety, they started with a very slow introduction. Carmine and Wilee were placed in two separate enclosures next to each other.
This allowed them to safely sniff each other through the fencing without any physical contact.
They kept this arrangement for at least a week, watching their interactions closely to make sure they were comfortable.
Best Friends For Life
Finally, the big day arrived. The team opened the door, encouraging Carmine to go in and officially meet Wilee face-to-face.
To everyone’s relief, they hit it off immediately. Everything just aligned perfectly for the two lonely coyotes.
Carmine and Wilee quickly grew to love each other, forming a deep bond.
Now, they are best friends for life, safe together at the sanctuary where they can play and just be coyotes without fear.
