Ohio Man Notices His Dogs Acting Strange Around Old Locked Shed, So He Decides To Peek Inside
At first, Brett Dugas thought his dogs were just being dogs.
His two German shepherds, Mya and Livia, had suddenly become obsessed with an old shed sitting in the backyard of his Ohio home.
The structure had been locked for years and was packed with old tools and junk, making it the perfect hiding spot for neighborhood groundhogs.
So when the dogs started sniffing around the shed, Dugas didn’t think much of it. At least, not at first.
But as the days went by, Mya and Livia only became more determined. They paced around the shed, sniffing every corner as if they knew something important was hidden inside.
Then one day, Dugas noticed just how intense their behavior had become. He shared in an interview:
“Mya and Livia were just all over the door. I mean, just sniffing. And then Mya started digging at the ground right by it.”
That was enough to convince him something unusual was going on.
Curious, Dugas walked around the side of the shed, looking for any clue about what had captured his dogs’ attention.
Then he glanced through one of the grimy windows. And his heart sank. He continued:
“I just happened to look through the dirty, dilapidated window and barely peek, and I just see this little gray kitten sitting there with his eyes closed, just meowing.”
Dugas had no idea how long the baby had been trapped there or where his mother might be. But one thing was immediately obvious: the kitten wasn’t doing well.
Its eyes looked severely infected, and it desperately needed help.
Without wasting any time, Dugas asked his neighbor to bring bolt cutters so they could finally open the locked shed.
The moment he got inside, his worries grew. The little gray kitten wasn’t alone.
Tucked away in a corner was another tiny kitten, his brother, hiding quietly in the shadows.
Suddenly, what began as a mystery had become an emergency rescue.
Dugas quickly contacted Lucky Paws Rescue, and the organization agreed to take the kittens in right away.
At the rescue, staff confirmed that both babies had eye infections, but thankfully, they had been found just in time.Within about 10 days, things started looking much brighter. Dugas said:
“They’re reacting well to the medicine, and [the rescuer] said they’re going to heal fine.”
The two kittens, whom Dugas lovingly named BARNey and SHEDeur as a nod to where they were found, have been thriving ever since. Soon, they’ll be old enough to be neutered and placed up for adoption.
Looking back, it’s hard not to wonder what might have happened if Mya and Livia hadn’t been so persistent. Maybe they were trying to help. Maybe they were just curious. Either way, their noses ended up saving two tiny lives.
Dugas added:
“[W]hether [Mya and Livia’s] intentions were to smell a snack or help do the right thing, either way, their noses played a huge part in making it happen.”
And for BARNey and SHEDeur, that’s all that matters. Because thanks to two curious dogs and one man who trusted them, the little kittens hidden inside an old shed finally got the second chance they deserved.
