Dog Roams Illinois Streets With Bucket On Head, Terrified Of Human Help

One day, the Gateway Pet Guardians team in St. Louis, Illinois, received a call about a stray dog in serious trouble.

This poor pup had a purple bucket stuck over his head, and the situation was far more dangerous than anyone had first realized.

Before this incident, the rescuers had been tracking the dog for several days. He’d been spotted repeatedly, but every attempt to get close ended with him slipping away.

Then one day, temptation got the better of him. He discovered a cheeseball bucket and, driven by hunger, stuck his head in – only to get it trapped.

With his vision blocked and breathing restricted, the team understood this wasn’t a simple mishap. It was a life-threatening emergency.

The dog’s condition was critical, but his fear of humans made it nearly impossible to help him. No matter what the rescuers tried, he refused to let anyone near.

Days went by with the dog remaining elusive. A concerned local eventually sent a photo and a location, giving the team a chance to act, but he still managed to escape.

It wasn’t until the following morning, with the help of Stray Rescue of St. Louis, that the team finally got close enough to try again. Even then, the scared pup bolted before they could reach him.

The rescuers knew time was running out. The little dog couldn’t keep fleeing forever, and his fear was becoming increasingly dangerous.

Finally, they resorted to using a mild sedative dart to slow him down, allowing them to get him to safety. As they explained in a Facebook post:

“We sent a team of staff out, including one of our veterinarians armed with a dart shooting apparatus with a mild tranquilizer. We weren’t going “home” without him!

It worked! After several failed attempts, the team caught him, and the bucket came off. He had been trapped for three or four days without food or water. A delay of even a few hours could have been disastrous.

Miraculously, this little pup, later named Buckethead, was still alive.

At first, Buckethead was understandably terrified. But once he realized he was safe, his true personality began to emerge, as the shelter shared:

“Once the tranq wore off, and he realized the bucket was gone and there was fresh food and water available, he was a much happier boy.”

The dog who once feared humans completely transformed into a loving, affectionate companion. It was amazing to watch him open up so quickly after all he’d endured.

Buckethead quickly became a favorite among staff, giving kisses and showing off his gentle, sweet nature. He fit in perfectly with the other dogs at the shelter.

Now, the once-frightened pup seems ready to trust and love again. The shelter is hopeful that the perfect family will come along to give him the forever home he deserves.

Despite a rough start in life, Buckethead has proven himself to be a survivor with a heart full of love, ready to share it with someone lucky enough to call him their own.
