Auctions can be terrifying places for any animal, but for a newborn, they are especially dangerous. One rescuer knew this all too well when she spotted a baby horse who had just been born in the middle of a chaotic auction facility.

She had already promised her husband that they wouldn’t take in any more rescues for the summer. However, seeing the helpless foal changed everything in an instant.

She knew it was a horrible environment for a fragile baby to spend its first days. Unable to scroll past, she broke her promise and immediately put up the money to save the mother and her newborn.

But her rescue mission didn’t end there. Right next to their listing was a photo of another mother and baby trapped in the exact same auction.

Looking at the second pair, the rescuer felt a wave of panic. She knew that if someone didn’t intervene, these vulnerable horses would likely be shipped across the border to Mexico.

"I just thought, ‘Oh, my God, I cannot allow these babies to be shipped,’" she recalled. Without hesitation, she purchased the second mother and foal as well.

It was a stark reminder of how many horses end up in these dire situations. As she noted, it is mind-boggling how often this happens, and there simply aren’t enough people willing to step in and do the right thing.

The two foals, eventually named Roman and Sonny, were incredibly young. Roman had just been born, and Sonny was only about a week old, which thankfully meant they hadn’t suffered much physical decline yet.

Their mothers, however, told a very different story. Both mares were severely underweight and completely shut down emotionally.

They were terrified of their surroundings and wanted absolutely nothing to do with humans. Thankfully, the rescuer managed to get all four horses out of the auction the very next day, making it her mission to show them love.

The horses were sent to a quarantine facility to begin their transition. The woman who handled their care during this critical time was nothing short of amazing, giving them the space they desperately needed.

The mares were completely unhandled, making it difficult for anyone to approach them. Caretakers could only get within about five feet of the nervous animals before they would shy away.

Despite their intense fear, they weren’t mean or dangerous. The rescuer could see that they had incredibly kind eyes, hidden just beneath their deep trauma.

Feeling Grass For The First Time

Because of the intense summer heat, the horses had to be transported to their new home in stages. Roman and his mother, who was named Matina, made the journey first.

Stepping off the trailer, it became clear that they had likely never experienced a real pasture before. The rescuer suspected they had never even seen grass in their entire lives.

The moment their hooves touched the green field, they began running and rolling in the dirt. It was a heartwarming milestone for a mother and son who had known only hardship.

A Hesitant Reunion

Two weeks later, it was time for Sonny and his mother, Ginger, to arrive at the rescue. But Ginger was absolutely terrified and refused to step off the trailer.

She likely thought the worst was about to happen, freezing in fear. Meanwhile, little Sonny’s head kept peeking out, perfectly displaying his bright and curious personality.

Finally, they gathered the courage to jump down. They were instantly reunited with Matina and Roman, picking up right where they left off after spending a month together in quarantine.

An Unbelievable Family Secret

About six months into their recovery, a wild horse expert visited the property to help gentle the mares. While observing the herd, the expert noticed something incredible about their behavior.

Based on their unique interactions and body language, she realized that Matina and Ginger weren’t just two random horses from the same auction. They were actually mother and daughter.

Without even knowing it, the rescuer had saved an entire family from being separated and shipped away. Once they were safe on sugary grass with unlimited hay, the whole family truly began to thrive.

Joined At The Hip

Today, the two young boys, Roman and Sonny, are living their absolute best lives. They have shared an unbreakable bond from the very beginning, spending their first year in awe of their safe new home.

Though they are always together, they have distinct personalities. Roman is a big clown who loves to play, while Sonny is more of a quiet thinker.

One of their favorite daily activities is chasing the farm’s utility Gator when it’s time to eat. Born in the darkest of places, these two best friends—and their mothers—now experience nothing but pure joy.
