Nevada Rescuer Takes In Kitten Given Months To Live, Never Expecting How He Would Change Her Story
When Wallace the kitten was diagnosed with a severe heart condition, a rescuer brought him home to give him the best hospice care possible. But as she faced her own health crisis, this little cat became her greatest comfort.
A Heart Beating Too Fast
When a tiny kitten arrived at Hearts Alive Village Animal Rescue in a cardboard box, it was immediately clear that something was wrong. The little feline was fragile, and his rescuer felt a troubling sensation the moment she picked him up.
“One thing I could tell right away is when I picked him up and held his chest, you could feel his heart,” she recalled. “It was pounding out of his chest, and I knew something was different about his heart.”
The kitten, soon named Wallace, had a unique appearance that instantly charmed his rescuer. With a face that looked like a “grumpy old man,” Wallace quickly captured her heart, even as she worried about his own.
A Devastating Diagnosis
Determined to find out what was wrong, the rescuer scheduled an appointment with a veterinary cardiologist. Wallace was just six months old at the time, but the news was grim.
The specialist examined the young cat and delivered a heartbreaking prognosis. “He’ll be lucky if he lives to be a year,” the cardiologist told her.
Knowing that Wallace might only have six months left to live, she was devastated. But rather than dwelling on the sadness, she made a promise to the little cat.
The Best Last Chapter
“I’m going to give him the best last little bit of his life, however long or short that is,” she decided. She brought Wallace home, intending to provide him with a loving, comfortable hospice environment.
She set out to ensure Wallace experienced all the joys a happy cat should know. She showered him with his favorite treats and made sure he felt safe and cherished.
Wanting him to experience the outdoors safely, she even bought a pet stroller. “I took him on stroller rides,” she said. “He really loved that. He was so chill.”
An Unexpected Timing
Fostering a medically fragile kitten was a significant commitment, especially given what the rescuer was facing in her own life. She was battling cancer and undergoing radiation treatments that very month.
“It definitely wasn’t a time that I had planned on taking in a permanent resident,” she admitted. Her energy was low, and her days were filled with difficult medical appointments.
But as she cared for Wallace, she realized that their paths had crossed for a reason. “I actually needed him at that time,” she shared.
Mutual Comfort
Wallace became a constant source of comfort for his rescuer during her grueling cancer treatments. The little cat with the fragile heart seemed to understand exactly what she needed.
“He gave me so much love. He was such a comfort to me,” she said. She spent her days snuggling and cuddling him, drawing strength from his gentle presence.
Every morning, Wallace would gently tap her arm to wake her up. He provided a sense of routine and unconditional love during the time she needed it most.
Defying The Odds
Months passed, and Wallace continued to thrive in his loving home. The six-month mark came and went, and the “grumpy old man” kitten kept growing and enjoying his life.
Recently, a major milestone arrived that left his rescuer in awe. Wallace celebrated his second birthday.
“I think the moment hit me recently, once he turned 2, and I thought, ‘He’s doubled his life expectancy,'” she marveled. The kitten who wasn’t supposed to see his first birthday was now a thriving two-year-old.
A Healing Heart
During a recent veterinary visit, the vet listened to Wallace’s chest and shared some astonishing news. The sound of his heart had changed.
The vet suggested that one of the areas that had a hole in his heart might actually be closing up. It was a medical surprise that no one had anticipated.
“She credits that to all the love and attention,” the rescuer smiled. The safe, stress-free, and loving environment had given Wallace’s body the chance it needed to heal.
A Permanent Bond
Today, Wallace is over two years old and shows no signs of slowing down. The fear that once clouded their days together has lifted.
“When he was little, I thought I had a limited amount of time. I don’t think that way as much anymore,” she said, getting emotional as she reflected on his survival.
As for whether Wallace is officially staying? “I get that question a lot,” she laughed. “He’s not going anywhere. He’s mine. He’s a large-hearted boy in more ways than one.”
