In a world that often overlooks the most vulnerable, one extraordinary couple is going above and beyond to ensure no senior dog is left behind.

Chris and Mariesa Hughes have dedicated their lives, and their home, to rescuing elderly and special needs dogs from shelters, giving them the second chance they so deeply deserve.

Their love for dogs began early, and it only grew stronger when they met. At the time, Chris already had six dogs of his own, and Mariesa had two.

From that moment on, their shared passion blossomed into something far greater than either of them could have imagined.

Together, Chris and Mariesa have rescued over 600 dogs, many of them older, sick, or abandoned by previous owners.

Most recently, they made headlines when they welcomed 19 senior dogs into their home at once, committed to providing love, comfort, and medical care no matter the cost.

When it comes to costs, they’re not cutting corners. In fact, just last year alone, the couple spent $700,000 on veterinary treatments to ensure their dogs received the best possible care.

From surgeries to long-term medications and therapies, they cover every penny, even for dogs who are eventually rehomed.

This commitment led them to create the Mr. Mo Project, a nonprofit organization named after their late senior dog, Moses.

The project is dedicated to rescuing senior dogs from high-risk shelters and placing them in loving foster homes.

What sets it apart? The organization continues to cover the medical expenses for each dog for the rest of its life. As Chris explains in the video:

“Shelters call us, and we take the dogs in and provide all financial care, eventually finding them the ideal foster home where they will live for the rest of their lives. We, on the other hand, are responsible for their medical care for the rest of their life.”

Their home in upstate New York has been lovingly transformed into a sanctuary.

There’s a fully enclosed backyard where the dogs can roam safely, individual kennels complete with nameplates, and even a hydrotherapy treadmill and laser treatment equipment to help with joint pain and wounds.

Every detail is thoughtfully planned to help these dogs live out their golden years in comfort and dignity. Mariesa admits:

“It’s bittersweet because that’s not always such a dream, it can be extremely stressful, but it’s amazing to see all of your hard work and seeing all of these lovely dogs loved, who are all deserving of a second chance.”

The dogs they care for come in all shapes, sizes, and conditions. Some are blind, others have mobility issues, and many have chronic health problems that require ongoing treatment.

Yet each one is cherished like a family member.

The work is hard, the sacrifices are real, but their hearts are full. Their story has inspired countless others around the world to consider opening their homes to older pets, proving that love truly knows no age.

Messages of gratitude pour in daily from people who are touched by their mission:

“I love that they take seniors, it makes my day.”

“Everyone needs to learn something from this. Animals are so valuable and their love is unbiased. All dogs deserve this life, esp senior dogs that have been thrown away.. this planet needs more ppl like this.”

“These are some of the most kindhearted people ever. Bless them and hope they’ll continue to support and be supported by all.”

Chris and Mariesa Hughes are living proof that even the smallest acts of compassion, combined with dedication, can create a ripple effect of hope and love.

In their eyes, every dog deserves a happy ending, no matter how old or broken they may seem.

And thanks to this inspiring couple, hundreds of dogs are now living their golden years surrounded by warmth, care, and the unconditional love they always longed for.
