Florida Rescuer Follows A Stray Pittie Into A Crawl Space And Discovers 9 Little Miracles

Some rescues begin with a call for help. Others begin with that uneasy feeling deep inside that won’t let you walk away.
That’s exactly what Adriana Figueroa felt when her phone buzzed with a short but urgent message one day. A black Pittie was out on the streets, looking frail and lost.
Adriana didn’t hesitate. She grabbed her keys, got in her car, and headed toward the neighborhood where the dog had last been seen.

She scanned every sidewalk, every driveway, and finally spotted her. A thin black pup was making her way down the street, moving persistently, even though her body showed how drained she was.
Adriana followed carefully, keeping her distance so she wouldn’t scare her off. The Pittie never once looked back, as if she knew exactly where she needed to be.
Then, without warning, she slipped into the darkness of a crawl space beneath a house. That’s when Adriana’s heart caught in her throat.

From the shadows came a tiny face. Then another. Then another. One by one, eight little puppies wriggled into view, their tails flicking and their eyes lighting up the moment their mama returned.
Adriana could hardly believe it. This poor dog, later named Veviana, had no food, no comfort, no safe place to go.
And yet, she had been fiercely protecting her babies, doing everything she could to keep them alive.

Adriana had seen a lot in her time with Women’s Volunteer Miami, but this sight touched her deeply. In a YouTube video, she explained:
“It made me incredibly sad that she was alone. It was just her and her babies, and she was just trying to find a place to keep them safe.”
She got down on her hands and knees and started reaching in for the pups. But it was far from easy.

Each time she stretched into the crawl space, the puppies scurried back into the dark corners. Veviana followed them closely, determined not to let them out of her sight.
After three long hours, she managed to coax out all eight puppies. But something in her gut told her she wasn’t done.
She decided to leave Veviana one more night, just in case.

And her instincts were right. When Adriana returned the next morning, Veviana was still there, this time with one more pup by her side. The ninth and final baby had been hiding all along.
Now the whole family was finally safe. No more cold nights, no more hiding under a house.
For the first time in a long time, Veviana didn’t have to carry the weight alone.

Adriana brought the little family home, and soon after, Big Dog Ranch Rescue opened its doors to the whole little family, ready to give them the new beginning they deserved.
Six of the puppies quickly found homes of their own. Veviana and three of her little ones are still waiting for forever families, but their time will come.
From that dark crawl space to warm beds and loving arms, they’ve already come such a long way. Veviana gave everything she had to her babies. Now it’s her turn to be cherished and cared for.
