California Woman Watches Footage Of Her Cat Facing A Coyote And Can’t Believe What It Does
Every cat owner worries about their pet getting into trouble outside.
But one California family never imagined they’d open a video from their neighbor and see their beloved cat standing face-to-face with one of the area’s most feared predators, and refusing to back down.

For Debbie Beltran of Pico Rivera, California, it was the kind of footage she had to watch more than once before she could believe what she was seeing. She shared in an interview:
“I was in shock. It took me a while to see—is that our cat or somebody else’s? And no, it’s our cat.”

Beltran was at work when a neighbor sent her security camera footage from outside her home on Manzanar Avenue.
At first, she probably expected to see something ordinary. Instead, the video showed her cat, Mama, locked in a tense standoff with a coyote in broad daylight.
The footage captured Mama standing her ground just outside the family’s yard as the much larger animal approached. Rather than immediately running away, the cat held her position, appearing determined not to give an inch. She even chased the coyote at one point.
Eventually, Mama climbed a nearby tree and escaped safely, leaving the coyote behind.

For Beltran, the whole encounter was especially unsettling because of when it happened. She said:
“Coyotes usually come out when the sun goes down. So to see this happen in broad daylight, that was shocking.”
Mama has been part of the family for about five years and is believed to be around 10 years old. Over the years, she’s earned a reputation for being brave, stubborn, and more than a little feisty.
In fact, Beltran wasn’t entirely surprised by the way her cat reacted, as she explained:
“She’s always been feisty, this type of cat, and has got into fights before, so it doesn’t surprise me.”

Still, watching the video was emotional. It’s one thing to know your cat is fearless. It’s another to see that courage tested against a wild predator.
And unfortunately, Beltran knows all too well how dangerous coyotes can be.
Just last year, she lost one of her other cats in a coyote attack. It was a heartbreaking loss that made Mama’s escape feel even more miraculous.
Since the incident, Beltran has been showering Mama with extra love and attention. After all, no matter how brave a pet may seem, moments like these remind owners just how fragile life can be and how quickly an ordinary day can turn into something terrifying.

At the same time, Mama’s story is a reminder of something many cat lovers already know: cats may be small, but they often have an incredible spirit.
Sometimes they’re stubborn. Sometimes they’re reckless. And sometimes, that fierce determination is exactly what helps them make it home.
For Beltran, seeing Mama safely walk away from the encounter was more than just a relief. It was a second chance she doesn’t take for granted.
