When I was a child, I was raised with, and surrounded by, all kinds of animals, and I admit, my childhood couldn’t be better.
I lived with my family on the farm, and we had cats, dogs, horses, sheep, rabbits, chickens, etc. Now that I’m all grown up, I can see that living with these animals helped me develop empathy and become the person I am today.
Therefore, I believe that every child needs a pet in his life, especially a cat. The reason for that isn’t just because of my own experience, but also because of a lot of research showing that pets are good for children.
Research on the Compatibility Of Cats With Children In The Family shows that cats can contribute to children’s emotional and physical development. Living with pets is associated with higher levels of empathy, which is very important.

Did you have a cat as a child? If you did, how did it help you in life? I know that being surrounded by different animals definitely helped me mature and develop empathy for others.
As John Bradshaw, a former reader in companion animal behavior at the University of Bristol, UK, and author of several books on cats and dogs, says:
“To have a real living, breathing, slightly messy animal running around the house is a good way of making those connections.”
