Stray cats who have spent their entire lives on the streets often manage to survive harsh winters, despite the odds.
However, newly abandoned cats, accustomed to the comfort of a loving home, are often left unprepared for life outdoors.
Tragically, many of these cats don’t survive the winter. But this tabby beauty turned out to be very fortunate.
It all happened when Greenpoint Cats, a rescue group from Brooklyn, received an urgent call about a cat found curled up in leaves in a nearby park.
A Heartbreaking Discovery
Without hesitation, the rescuers rushed to the park to help the distressed feline. Upon arriving, they learned the cat had been there for two days, trying to stay warm.
The scene broke their hearts. One of the rescuers shared in an interview:
“The shivering cat had made a little nest in the leaves to try to keep warm.”
But just a few moments later, something beautiful happened. When one of the rescuers called out to the cat, she perked up and meowed back.
The rescuer extended her hand, and to her surprise, the cat approached willingly. She allowed the rescuer to pick her up and place her in a carrier, as if she knew they were there to help.
The rescuers were moved by her friendly demeanor and suspected she had been abandoned.
A Glimmer Of Hope
After safely capturing the cat, the rescue team took her to the vet’s office, where she was estimated to be 11 years old.
Miraculously, she was in good health and immediately charmed everyone around her with her loving personality.
However, the vets uncovered a shocking truth: the cat was microchipped. But, after contacting the owner, they found out that the cat had been abandoned in the park on purpose.
Refusing to give up on her, the rescuers vowed to give her all the love and care she deserved. One of the rescuers said:
“We named her Karen for McCarren Park, where she was found.”
Karen was placed in a foster home, where she finally had plenty of food, a warm bed, and a safe place to rest. Reflecting on her ordeal, the rescuers shared:
“It must have been a terrifying two days out in the cold.”
A few hours later, the rescuers felt a huge relief. It turned out they rescued Karen just in time before a freezing rain began to fall.
A New Beginning
Safe and thriving in her foster home, Karen quickly captured the hearts of her caretakers. Her resilience and affection amazed them. One rescuer said:
“For two days and nights, she survived in below-freezing temperatures by nesting in a pile of leaves. And yet, her spirit is unbroken and her love unconditional.”
The final task was to find Karen a forever home. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for her to capture someone’s heart.
Karen met a lovely family who instantly fell head over heels for her. They wanted to adopt her, saying:
“We just left out meet with Karen, and we are in love.”
Now, Karen is living her best life with a family who loves and cherishes her, and she’ll never have to worry about surviving the cold again.
