The saddest reality about animal shelters is that animals who don’t find their forever homes often end up on euthanasia lists because the shelters are overcrowded every day.

But how do you look at an animal scheduled for euthanasia and say goodbye? It’s truly heartbreaking, and this California shelter volunteer knows this better than anyone.

Evelyn Garces, a dedicated shelter volunteer from California, has met many animals who found themselves on the euthanasia list. Yet, she continues fighting for their second chance at life.

Recently, she posted a heartbreaking video of a female German Shepherd named Sandy, facing her inevitable end.

The video showed Sandy’s last walk before euthanasia, and it broke millions of hearts. However, it also led to a miracle…

Sandy had been brought to Lancaster Animal Care Center in California with her puppy. Soon after, her puppy was adopted by a loving family, but Sandy remained at the shelter, constantly overlooked.

What many didn’t know was that Sandy was a loving dog who desperately needed a second chance at life.

Despite this, she was ignored by potential adopters until she was scheduled for euthanasia.

After learning about Sandy’s situation, Evelyn instantly stepped in to help. She captured a heartbreaking video of Sandy’s last walk two days before the euthanasia procedure and posted it on TikTok, saying:

“Today was Sandy’s last fun day out of her kennel. She’s been through a lot. She was brought to the shelter as a stray with her baby. Her baby was adopted, leaving only Sandy behind. She’s cleared for euthanasia and scheduled to go to heaven in less than 48 hours. Tomorrow is her last chance.”

During her final walk, the shelter staff made sure Sandy got the chance to spend the best day ever.

Sandy took a short dip in the pool, got a chance to say goodbye to her best dog friend, and she also received many of her favorite treats. The video text read:

“She got the last treat she’ll ever get today, and she got to say goodbye to her friend. She didn’t want to see him go.”

Evelyn shared the video hoping that someone would notice Sandy and save her in the nick of time. Fortunately, that’s exactly what happened.

The video went viral and then, a true miracle happened.

Sandy’s video captured the attention of a loving woman from San Diego, California. As soon as she saw the video, she reached out to the shelter, asking to meet Sandy.

Needless to say, it was love at first sight. The two instantly bonded, and just like that, instead of being euthanized, Sandy went straight to her new home with her forever human.

Sandy had been through so much. She spent months, even years, as a stray, she was overlooked at the shelter, and was eventually scheduled for euthanasia.

But, thanks to Evelyn’s determination and her viral video, Sandy was rescued in the nick of time and finally got the second chance she deserved.

After everything she had been through, Sandy now has a family of her own and will never have to worry about life again.
