Every cat lover and owner knows that giving a cat medication can be challenging.
However, some pet parents have mastered the art of making it a smooth and even enjoyable experience.
Take Rylie, a sweet, orange tabby who’s had his share of challenges but handles them with grace and a little help from his family.
Rylie’s journey began with a surprising diagnosis. At just two years old, his face and ears suddenly became covered in a rash, prompting his family to rush him to the vet.
It appeared to be some sort of allergy, but no one could pinpoint the exact cause. His family tried steroid treatment, hoping it would ease his discomfort. Unfortunately, it led to an unexpected side effect – Rylie developed diabetes.
His mom, Melanie, admits that it turned their world upside down. This was just one blow in a series, as they had recently lost Rylie’s best friend and housemate, a six-year-old cat named Henry.
Despite the heartbreak, Melanie and her partner, Samantha McConnell, were no strangers to animal care.
As a registered nurse, Samantha had some medical expertise, but managing Rylie’s diabetes was a steep learning curve.
They joined online support groups and researched every detail. Now, twice a day, they monitor Rylie’s blood sugar levels and give him his insulin injections.
It was difficult at first, but over time, it became part of their routine. These days, Rylie has even come to look forward to his injections.
Now, he knows his cue, he happily trots over with his tail held high whenever he hears the words “insulin time.” As Melanie shared on Instagram, writing as if Rylie himself were posting:
“Insulin time twice a day is part of my daily routine for the past year! My meowms have made this such a pawsitive experience for me as you can see me walking over to get my injection as soon as meowm says ‘insulin time!’ My tail straight up in the air. Although I am starting to feel the pokes more now, I still tolerate it and know lots love and treats are coming my way!”
This new routine didn’t come without its struggles. For a while, the sight of the syringe caused anxiety for both Rylie and his family. But with consistent affection and plenty of treats, it gradually turned into a special bonding moment.
Now, Rylie’s fans tune in for updates, where he struts around with his “space donut” (a cone he sometimes has to wear around his neck). Despite the diabetes and recurring rashes, he’s still the happy, playful kitty he’s always been.
His moms remain hopeful that remission is possible one day. In the meantime, Rylie’s online followers not only shower him with love but have also helped with the high costs of his care.
Melanie and Samantha are both overwhelmed and overjoyed by all the support Rylie is receiving online. Even though the rashes remain a lingering mystery, the family has found ways to keep his spirits high.
Through it all, Rylie’s story has provided support and inspiration for others facing similar challenges.
You can follow Rylie’s journey on Instagram, where he’s an adorable ambassador for diabetic cats everywhere. As one fan commented:
“Rylie, you’re amazing! And your meowms ROCK! Thank you so much for sharing your story. Your meowms helped me join a FB group to learn how to help my own newly diagnosed diabetic kitty. The people there will be key to helping us along our journey and will you! THANK YOU!!!”
And with his tail held high, he’s showing the world just how brave a little orange tabby can be.
