Kansas Shelter Dog Endures Five Heartbreaking Returns But Still Keeps Hoping For Love
Seven years ago, Luna was just a young pit bull mix with almost no time left. At only two years old, she was already on the euthanasia list at Wichita Animal Shelter. Everything pointed to an ending far too soon.
But then, something unexpected happened.
At the very moment Luna needed a miracle, a brand-new rescue was just beginning its mission — Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary. And Luna became one of their very first saves. A life pulled back from the edge… right when hope finally arrived.
Miranda Munden, a longtime volunteer coordinator at the sanctuary, shared in an interview:
“She’s been with us nearly every day since.”
But Luna’s road to a forever home was far more painful than anyone could have imagined. Over the past seven years, she’s been adopted and returned five times.
At first, Luna struggled around other dogs, so the sanctuary partnered with a training facility. The trainers worked with her, saw her potential, and fell completely in love.
They even adopted her themselves, and for a moment, it seemed like Luna had finally found her happy ending.
But that happiness didn’t last. When the couple started a family, they decided they couldn’t manage Luna too.
The years that followed brought more letdowns. Another family returned Luna because of her allergies.
She has severe sensitivities, which sometimes make caring for her challenging.
She can only eat salmon-based food and needs daily meds, wipe-downs after going outside, and cute pajamas to protect her skin. At night, she wears a cone to keep from scratching.
But Luna never complains. She patiently tolerates it all. What she really needs is someone willing to stay committed and love her through it.
Other adoptions ended in heartbreak too. One family gave her up over a new boyfriend, and another returned her after a tough vet visit, even though they’d been warned.
A sponsor even offered to cover her food and medical care for life, but their vet suggested euthanasia, and they gave up.
The rescue quickly took her back and promised she’d never be abandoned again. That was two years ago.
Now at 9 years old, Luna is officially a senior dog. She may be older, but she still has so much love to give.
She’s still full of love, loyalty, and a little spark of hope, as Miranda shared:
“She’s pretty mellow … just always on her little dog bed, with her pajamas, waiting for someone to snuggle her.”
At the sanctuary, Luna has a best friend named Copper, another dog with special needs.
Luna and Copper are inseparable. They play like puppies, cuddle close, and remind each other that love still exists.
Despite all the heartbreak, Luna still lights up when she meets new people. She may be a little shy at first, but she warms up quickly.
After seven years of broken promises, Luna is still waiting. Still dreaming. Still ready for the day when she’ll finally curl up in the arms of someone who will never leave her behind.
Miranda is hopeful that this sweet pup will find that special someone soon, sharing:
“There has to be someone out there, you know – other than us – who loves her.”
