Stray Snake Lands In Alaska Shelter, Then Finds Forever Home In Under An Hour

stray snake shows up in alaska shelter

You wouldn’t expect a snake to steal the spotlight at an animal shelter, but that’s exactly what happened in Anchorage Animal Care and Control (AACC) in Alaska.

It all started when a resident spotted something unusual while checking their mail. It was Whey, a calm and friendly milk snake, wandering all alone.

Worried about his safety, they contacted AACC, and an officer came to pick him up. The shelter took Whey into their care, hoping his owner might show up.

From the moment the shelter staff at AACC got their hands on him, it was clear Whey was special. He wasn’t frightened or skittish like many stray animals often are. Instead, he was relaxed, comfortable being handled, and curious about his surroundings.

That calm personality suggested he had spent time in a home before, as Joel Jorgensen, the shelter’s community outreach manager, shared in an interview:

“I mean, it’s definitely a domestic animal, not a wild Alaskan snake … that we don’t have.”

Whey’s arrival at the shelter was unusual, but the staff treated him with the same care and attention as any other animal. They made sure he was safe, fed, and comfortable.

The shelter decided to introduce him to the public through social media, hoping to find him a home, or at least to spread the word about this unexpected guest. They wrote on Facebook:

“We currently have a milk snake named Whey looking for that perfect place to call home. Whey did come into the shelter as a stray, so not much is known of his background, but while being in our care, he has been easy to handle and feed.”

The pictures shared with the announcement showed Whey resting peacefully across someone’s arm, showing just how calm and gentle he was.

The post emphasized his friendly, laid-back personality and encouraged anyone who loves snakes to consider giving him a forever home.

The response was immediate. People were intrigued and delighted by his gentle, approachable demeanor. Applications started rolling in almost immediately.

Incredibly, within just an hour, Whey had already been adopted! He went from wandering alone and uncertain to settling into a safe, cozy, and loving forever home.

Joel said it was a wonderfully quick outcome, sharing:

“It was very quick, which we were always happy to see, no matter whether it’s a snake or any other animal we get in the shelter.”

Whey’s story shows that every animal deserves love, no matter how different they are. You don’t have to be furry or fluffy to be an amazing companion, and even snakes can teach us about patience, kindness, and joy.

Whey went from a stray wandering the streets of Anchorage to a little online star and finally into a safe, happy home where he can really thrive.

Now he’s living the good life, getting all the care, attention, and comfort he could ever need.
