Shelters and nonprofit animal organizations nationwide are working tirelessly to rescue abandoned and abused cats from the streets.
Sadly, more and more cats are abandoned every day, left to await their final moments on the streets. Whenever I encounter such stories my heart breaks a bit, but today’s story is probably the worst.
Usually, we don’t witness the exact moment when the cat is abandoned, we only learn about their sad story once the shelter investigates further.
However, the owner from today’s story was caught red-handed in her act, all thanks to a security camera from a local store in San Bernardino.
The woman stopped her car right in front of the store and once she opened the door you could see a cardboard box full of newborn kittens. Yes, you read that right, newborn kittens!
The adorable mama cat jumped out of the car, confused by her owner’s action. The poor souls couldn’t understand why her human mom took her kittens and placed them on the cold concrete!
The poor ginger cat was running around, worried about her babies while trying to get back into the car. Just seconds later, her owner drove off while the cat was running after the car.
In the morning, the store owner came and was devastated by the sight. Five adorable tabby kittens were left alone for almost six hours before the store owner showed up.
To make matters worse, mama cat was nowhere to be found. The poor soul was probably scared and confused and tried running after her owner.
The shop owner immediately contacted Jaina from Cats of San Bernardino, asking them for help. Jaina, an amazing rescuer who saved hundreds of cats from the harsh street life, responded instantly. As she said in her post:
“People think that cats can survive on the streets alone, BUT they can’t! Feral cats have better odds, but friendly domestic cats will slowly starve, get hit by a car, harmed by humans, or taken by predators. The lack of compassion this person showed is disgusting.”
Jaina rushed the kittens to her shelter and contacted some foster volunteers, hoping someone would be able to help. Unfortunately, mama cat was still missing, as Jaina also mentioned:
“We are ENRAGED because the Mama was so confused that she ran off. We have been canvassing the area, and the business owner has been checking their cameras, but she hasn’t been spotted.”
Although the kittens stood a good chance under the care of experienced foster volunteers, it would be ideal to reunite them with their mom.
Why their owner decided to abandon them was uncertain, but I’m sure you can agree with me it could have been done more humanely.
Caring for a mama cat and her kittens can be overwhelming at times, but it’s better to ask for help than abandoning these poor souls.
