Colorado Boyfriend Didn’t Want A Cat, But One Tiny Orange Fluff Ball Completely Melted His Heart
Erin always wanted a cat, but her boyfriend Dan wasn’t so sure. One secret trip to the shelter later, a tiny orange kitten changed their lives forever.

Erin had wanted a cat her entire life. Growing up with a family that suffered from allergies meant she could never have a feline companion of her own.
But as an adult, she finally had the chance to make her lifelong dream come true. She just needed the right moment to make it happen.
All it took was one photograph from a friend to set her plan into motion, though she still had one major hurdle to overcome.
A Secret Trip To The Shelter

Erin’s friend sent her a picture of a kitten currently waiting at their local animal shelter. His mother had been a stray, and he was just a tiny, irresistible orange fluff ball.
Erin knew she had to meet him, but her boyfriend, Dan, wasn’t exactly looking to add a pet to their family.
Deciding it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission, Erin planned a surprise. She took Dan for a drive to the shelter without telling him their true destination.
The Reluctant Boyfriend

When they arrived at the rescue, Dan realized what was happening. He made it clear to Erin that he didn’t really want a cat.
However, the shelter staff soon placed the tiny orange kitten directly into Dan’s arms. In that single moment, everything shifted.
As soon as Dan held the little stray, his hesitation vanished completely. He looked at Erin and simply said, "Yeah, let’s take him home."
A Grateful Ride Home

The shelter provided a standard pet carrier for the drive home. But the kitten had other plans for his first journey with his new family.
Instead of staying in the box, he climbed out and spent the ride pacing back and forth between Erin and Dan’s laps. He eventually settled down and just looked up at them.
Erin remembers how happy and incredibly grateful he appeared in those quiet moments. The bond was already forming before they even reached their front door.
Naming A Sweetheart

That very first night, the kitten proved he was meant to be part of their family forever. He nuzzled his way underneath the covers and slept right between the couple.
Erin decided to name him Liebchen, borrowing the moniker from a cat her mother had at her age. She had always thought it was a beautiful choice.
In German, Liebchen translates to "sweetheart" or "closest to my heart." It was the perfect fit for a kitten who still sleeps right between them every single night.
The Call Of The Mountains

Erin and Dan live in the beautiful mountains of Colorado. It didn’t take long for the stunning environment to catch Liebchen’s attention.
The growing kitten was endlessly curious about the world outside his window. He would sit by the screen door and cry, begging to explore the great outdoors.
Knowing it wasn’t safe for him to roam freely, his parents came up with a creative solution. They decided to see if this unique cat would tolerate wearing a harness.
A Ten-Week-Old Adventurer

They introduced Liebchen to a leash and harness, hoping he would take to it. To their surprise, he didn’t mind the gear at all.
When he was just ten weeks old, Erin and Dan took him on his very first hike. The tiny orange cat absolutely loved exploring the mountain trails with his family.
Now, he knows exactly what his harness means. If he wants to go out, he jumps at the leash hanging on the wall to let his parents know it’s time for a walk.
Skiing And Tiny Goggles

Liebchen’s adventurous spirit didn’t stop at hiking. Erin describes him as a "dog, cat, human mix" who wants to be part of every single activity.
He even goes skiing with his family, riding along and taking in the snowy sights. He loves feeling the wind in his whiskers as they glide down the mountain.
To protect his eyes from the glare and wind, he wears a pair of tiny goggles. He doesn’t mind them at all, happily taking in the views like a seasoned pro.
An Ambassador For Rescues

When people see the family out and about, they are usually stunned. Strangers constantly stop to ask, "Is that a cat on a leash?"
Erin sees Liebchen as an ambassador, proving that rescue animals have incredible, resilient personalities. She believes they know when they’ve been saved, and they return that love tenfold.
Though they set out to give a tiny stray kitten the best life possible, Erin gets emotional thinking about their deep connection. "We always say he rescued us," she shares, grateful for the beautiful companion they found in a shelter.
