Do you have more than one cat in your household? The more the merrier, right?

I know your home is filled with extra joy and playtime, but having multiple cats also means more responsibility, and this includes the least fun of all cat parent chores – litter cleaning.

You already know how picky cats can be; if the litter box is not clean enough, they may even protest against it by not using the litter box at all! The problem is, a litter box getting too dirty can happen quickly when multiple cats are using it.

If you’re looking at multi cat litter box solutions, this article will provide you with some tips and tricks that will make your litter-box search easier, as well as some great products you can get on Amazon or Chewy.

Multi Cat Litter Box Solutions: What Are Your Options?

cute cat in litter box

When buying a litter box or litter boxes for a multi-cat household, there are many factors to take into consideration, including the cats’ age, size, and even personal preferences (some cats will like one type of litter while others refuse to use it, for example).

With this being said, what are your litter box options ?

You can choose from:

🐾 Regular litter boxes – the most budget friendly option.

🐾  Manual self-cleaning litter boxes – a bit more expensive, but will last you a long time.

🐾  Automatic self-cleaning litter boxes – an expensive, but very efficient option.

Essential Litter Box Characteristics

Before discussing the products themselves, let’s briefly cover the essential characteristics of a litter box. You should keep these specifications in mind, and we will discuss them in more detail later in the article.

A litter box should have the following characteristics:

🐾 The size of the litter box should be 1.5 times larger than your biggest cat.

🐾 The litter box has to fit into your home or the room you planned to place it in (check the dimensions of the space before going shopping).

🐾 It has to have higher walls or a dome in order to prevent spillages and litter tracking.

🐾 Walls can’t be too high if you have kittens or older cats who may struggle to get into the box.

🐾 The litter box should be easy to assemble.

🐾 Look for value for money – any litter box must be worth the price you’re paying.

🐾 The litter box should be suitable for the type of litter your cats normally use or which you know they will be happy with.

Now let’s get into reviewing the best cat litter boxes!

1. Regular Litter Boxes

When it comes to regular litter boxes being used in a multi-cat home, you need to know that you’ll be scooping poop a lot. If you’re someone that hates this task, then I suggest you look at self-cleaning litter boxes, which are also covered in this article, so keep on reading.

My personal favorites when it comes to regular litter boxes that I have used are reviewed below.

2. Manual Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes

Manual self-cleaning litter boxes have been my choice of litter boxes in the past and have worked amazingly for me. They are often the best option for multi-cat homes that don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on automatic litter boxes…

The main feature of manual self-cleaning litter boxes is that scooping is not done manually with a scoop, but rather by tilting the litter box or pulling a lever. Inside of the box, the clean litter falls through the holes of a sifting layer, while the clumps are retained for easy disposal.

They take the job of scooping poop out of your hands so you just need to throw it in the trash. They’re a great option for cat owners that don’t like dealing with cat feces themselves, but are a bit more expensive than regular litter boxes.

All three products below have been tried out by either myself or my friends, as all of us are fans of manual self-cleaning litter boxes!

3. Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes

Automatic self-cleaning litter boxes have been more and more popular recently and there is currently a fairly wide range of options on the market. It’s hardly surprising – they really are an amazing option. They handle your cat’s waste for you as soon as your feline friend is done using the litter box.

Cats shouldn’t share litter boxes, primarily due to how quickly waste accumulates. Regular or manual self-cleaning litter boxes are not as good for multi-cat use compared to automatic litter boxes, which start their cleaning cycles immediately after each use.

Below are 6 products I’ve heard a lot of great feedback about. I have personally tried two of these with my cats (the CatGenie AI and the Litter Maid automatic litter box).

Things You Must Consider Before Buying Litter Boxes For Your Multi-Cat Home

In order for you to choose the best possible option for your multi-cat home, I’ve put together a list of questions that will act as a guide when you’re purchasing your ideal litter box.

Let’s get started!

1. What’s The Size Of The Litter Box?

There is an unofficial “rule” that the size of a litter box needs to be 1.5 times larger than the cat using it. So before you go out shopping, make sure to have an idea of your cat’s dimensions and size. I know it may sound strange, and you’re thinking “Of course I know the size of my cat”, but trust me – it can be a bit tricky when it comes to choosing the proper litter box – even a few centimeters can make a difference.

If you have multiple cats, buy a litter box that is 1.5 times larger than the biggest cat in your household. This applies if your cats are used to sharing litter boxes, so it’s best to accommodate the biggest cat as the others will not mind the bigger box.

2. Do You Have An Appropriate Place For It In Your Home?

If you’re an owner of bigger cats, it might be a bit tricky placing larger litter boxes around the house (or in the same room) due to their size, especially if you have a smaller home.

If you’re thinking about buying automatic litter boxes, think about whether you have an electric outlet near the space where you’re planning to place the litter box.

If the litter boxes you choose are an odd shape or are a bit taller, think about if they’re going to fit the space you had in mind for them.

3. Are The Litter Boxes Efficient And Practical?

Efficiency and practicality are priorities for most pet owners. Litter boxes doing their job exactly as they’re supposed to, and being as efficient as their manufacturer claims they are, is what everyone wants.

Litter boxes should be:

🐾 Easy to assemble

🐾 Easy for cats to use it

🐾 Comfortable for cats to use

🐾 The right size, especially if you have kittens or senior cats (litter boxes shouldn’t be too high for them to climb in)

🐾 Prevent litter scattering by having an appropriate height of the walls (I suggest you check out some top-entry litter boxes if your cat is a very messy litter-box user)

🐾 Litter or a pad should absorb urine efficiently

🐾 Separate the clean litter from the cat’s waste efficiently (in the case of sifting litter boxes)

Some characteristics you can observe before buying the litter boxes, while others only after buying and using them. You can only make sure you get it as close to perfect as possible before buying, such as choosing the right sized box, with appropriate wall height, etc.

4. What Size Is The Waste Container?

The size of the waste container is an important characteristic because it determines how many cats can use a single litter box within a day and this reflects how often you’re going to have to take the waste to the trash.

For example, if the waste container is small, that means you’re going to have to take the waste out to the trash more often than if the waste container was larger.

This is simply a matter of your own preference and how often you want to have to clean up the litter box.

This does not apply to regular or automatic litter boxes, as they do not have a separate container for cat feces.

5. Which Litter Does It Use?

Not all litter types are compatible with all types of litter boxes.

The “rules” for using a specific litter are the strictest when it comes to automatic self-cleaning litter boxes, as they’re designed to work only for a specific litter, or a narrow range of cat litters. If your cat dislikes silica litter and that particular litter is used in a particular automatic litter box, then you should not get that litter box.

There are specifications for the kind of litter that must be used in manual self-cleaning litter boxes, and that material is clumping cat litter. So if your cat is used to another type of litter, take that into consideration, as well as your cat’s adaptability to different litters.

6. Is It Good At Odor-Control?

Odor-control is a major factor when choosing the type of litter and the type of litter box. Odor containment is a top priority for every cat owner, especially in homes that have multiple cats. If the odor of one kitty’s waste is bad – imagine the odor for three cats.

When choosing litter boxes for your home, take into consideration the efficiency of odor-control according to the type of litter they’re using as well as the design of the litter box (for example, covered litter boxes are good at preventing odor from filling the room).

7. Is It Good Value For The Money You’re Paying?

Let’s be real – cat litter boxes are not just a few dollars. Even regular litter boxes require some money to be spent, not to mention the price of automatic litter boxes.

Buying a litter box is not something you do every day so it’s best to get it right on the first try.

Be warned that some cat litter boxes are overpriced. If there is a less expensive litter box with exactly the same specifications, then of course it’s better to get the cheaper one.

My advice is that you inform yourself about the price range of cat litter boxes you’re interested in, in order to avoid overpaying.

8. Are Your Cats Comfortable Using It?

Your kitty being comfortable using the litter box with no reluctance is a big factor. Due to their dislike of enclosed spaces, some cats prefer open litter boxes. Some cats have sensitive paws so only certain types of litter suit them. When it comes to automatic litter boxes, some cats might find them too unfamiliar to use it comfortably, or they may not like the sound the litter box is making (and automatic litter boxes can be a bit noisy).

Truth be told, sometimes you will not know your cat’s preferences until you try something new. However, if you do know what your kitty likes or doesn’t like, try to take that into consideration when buying a litter box.

Number Of Litter Boxes = Number Of Cats +1

Litter Box For Pine Pellets

Choosing the right number of litter boxes is extremely important for homes with multiple cats. The general rule is, as the heading says: one litter box per cat plus an extra litter box. This does not hold if you have a single cat, where having one litter tray or a litter box is perfectly fine.

Why is it not recommended that multiple cats use the same litter box?

Having more litter boxes means less conflict between cats. Cats are notoriously territorial and sharing a litter box increases the possibility of fighting between cats.

If you have three cats and one litter box, for instance, the strongest cat may decide to designate the litter box as their own and prevent the other cats from using it.That leaves the other two cats needing to find another place to “do their business” and you definitely don’t want that to be your living room carpet!

It’s also an issue if one cat needs to use the litter box, but another cat is already using it… Having multiple litter boxes prevent a cat needing a litter box that’s already occupied.

Having numerous cats use the same litter box has the additional disadvantage of making the box very dirty very quickly. Cats are well-known for liking their litter to be clean. If a kitty finds her litter too dirty, your living room carpet may again become a viable alternative!

I am sure you now understand why having more litter boxes is better!

Proper Placing Of Litter Boxes In Multi-Cat Homes

Litter boxes should be placed:

🐾 Somewhere private

🐾 Not all in one spot, but around the house

🐾 Preferably in a room with no doors or in an open space

🐾 Away from each other

🐾 Away from cat food and water bowls

Cats (and humans) like their privacy while doing what they need to do. That means you should not place the litter box in the living room where the kids are playing, the dog is barking, and other household members are watching the TV. There is just too much noise and commotion, which discourages your cat from using the litter box.

The accessibility of litter boxes is also crucial. If you have a house with multiple floors, make sure to have a litter box on each floor. Also, a litter box should not be placed in a room with a door that is too heavy for your cat to open (if your cat even knows how to open the door!).

Make sure the litter boxes are placed in quiet, somewhat secluded areas of the house that your cat can access easily.

A litter box should never be placed near a kitty’s food or water bowl. That’s a huge no-no for cats. Cats have a very sensitive sense of smell, so the smell of cat waste and the smell of food should never mix. If they are placed too close, this will prevent the cat from eating and possibly from even using the litter box.

It’s preferable to keep the food and water bowls and litter boxes in different rooms.

In Conclusion

litter box for cat

Having more than one cat at home means more joy but also more responsibility, especially when it comes to the litter box needs of your cats. Don’t worry, there are many multi cat litter box solutions!

I am sure your kitties will be happy with your choice!
